Gym Upgrades For a Stronger SLSC

The Mollymook Surf Life Saving Club (MSLSC) has added some serious muscle to their training facilities and at the core, it’s all about supporting youth wellbeing, surf safety and connection.

With funding support from Community Bank South Coast, the club upgraded its gym equipment to better serve its 900+ members, 927 volunteers and a growing number of young lifesavers who are the future of local patrols.

The gym, which is open daily and free for all Surf Life Saving Australia members, plays a vital role in the club’s Youth Fitness Program helping members aged 8 to 80 stay physically strong and mentally well throughout the year.

The Club said, “Our clubhouse is a local hub. This upgrade helps us attract and retain younger members, improve patrol readiness and build stronger community connections.”

Community Bank South Coast's Community Engagement Manager Caroline Boland recently toured the facility and got a firsthand look at the new setup, with a cheeky suggestion she might “test out the leg press.”

The project addresses a sharp drop-off in youth participation during teenage years, particularly following recent challenges like the Currowan bushfires and COVID-19 lockdowns. The new equipment is helping re-engage young people in a safe, social and fitness-focused environment.

The club’s goals with the program are clear:

  • Increase youth membership and retention

  • Improve youth mental health and wellbeing

  • Strengthen volunteer patrol capacity

  • Support safer beaches and more confident future leaders.

With the new gym equipment in place, the club is well-positioned to keep building a healthy, connected and capable generation of lifesavers.
