Local Student Takes Research Global

Updated: 9 hours ago

A high-achieving local student from Ulladulla, presented her cutting-edge research on a global stage and Community Bank South Coast proudly helped get her there.

A standout at Country Universities Centre Southern Shoalhaven, Brianna has just completed studying a Bachelor of Cyber Security (Honours) with Deakin University. Her G6 research into future radio access networks and optical x-haul technologies for beyond-5G was accepted at the Optical Fiber Communications Conference which is the world’s leading event in the field held in March 2025 in San Francisco.

It’s an extraordinary achievement for a 28 year old young woman who once struggled with maths in high school, finishing with an ATAR of 37. Through dedication and a fierce curiosity, she’s become one of Deakin’s top IT students, boasting a WAM of 96, multiple scholarships and published academic work.

Country Universities Adam Gowan said, “Brianna’s journey is more than personal success, it’s proof that students from regional Australia can thrive in global research. She’s blazing a path for other students who want to stay local, but dream big.”

As a woman in a field where only 15% of the workforce is female, Brianna is committed to breaking barriers and bringing that inspiration back home. Her story an inspiration for other young people across the region, especially young female students in STEM and older students who want to pursue higher education while staying connected to their community.

Community Engagement Manager Caroline Boland was on hand for Country Universities Centre Southern Shoalhaven graduation celebrations in December.
